Akonia Holographics is a company based out of Denver that makes augmented reality waveguide lenses.
In a statement given to TechCrunch, an Apple spokesperson remarked that Apple likes to work with smaller startups but that they don’t really publicly discuss their reasoning or plans for acquiring them.
However, it is clear from this acquisition that Apple is continuing to invest their resources onto the augmented reality industry, and they are developing an AR headset.
Previously, the startup had raised $11.6 million in funding, which shows how popular this technology is becoming.
Apple’s competitors have previously done work with AR headsets, while Apple has mostly implemented AR on their phones. It will be interesting to see what angle Apple will approach Augmented Reality headsets with, and which kind of user experience it will provide its loyal customers.
